On 17th June 2012 I will be participating in my first triathlon, Ironman 70.3 at Wimbleball, Exmoor. The event comprises of a 1.2 mile open water swim, 56 mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run (half marathon). According to the guide the race has the reputation as being the toughest 70.3 in the world because of the steep descents and 'intersting' climbs. Although I have run marathons, cycled 100 mile rides and swam in open water races, this will be the first event where I will combine all three disciplines.
On 16th September 2012 I aim to 'step up' the challenge and participate in Ironman Wales in Tenby. In this event the distances are doubled to a 2.4 mile sea swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run (marathon). In this race there are no huge climbs but there is also very little flat.
After serving 14 years in the Army, Help for Heroes is a cause close to my heart and I have nothing but admiration for the spirit the wounded show in overcoming their injuries and rebuilding their lives. I only hope that I can follow their lead in completing my two challenges.
